6 lug design. 3-ply shell (maple outer ply, maple inner ply) with maple reinforcing hoops.
Niles badge with serial number #54981, date stamped Jan 65.
Features original chrome hardware, including Rapid strainer, internal tone control, snare side 'Rim Shot counterhoop' and butt end.
The tension rods are modern, as is the top hoop.
There is aging, pitting and scuffs but this is to be expected.
As often the case with these student drums; the wood and glue used isn’t quite up to todays standards. The glue has dried out in places and as has the internal ply of wood. I think this is poplar and is common in a lot of vintage shells. The shell isn’t as structurally sound as some but it tunes up and down great, and is a wonderful players drum, in a rare duco finish.
Being a 6 lug it is naturally great for some fat tones, but with those Slingerlands rounded bearing edges, it makes it a lovely drum.
The original cork washer on the strainer had disintegrated (as they usually do), so I have fitted a brand new rubber grommet which works great.
Stripped, cleaned and polished in my workshop, August 2020.
Fitted with fairly new Remo Ambassador and Ambassador snare side heads, with brand new Puresound Custom Pro Steel wires.
