Apr 3 1969 Ludwig ‘Standard S-300’ Drum Kit
Sized: 20x14”, 12x8”, 13x9” 14x14”
in original Avocado Strata wrap
Legendary 3-ply Ludwig shells with the Ludwig Standard 'Granitone acoustical coating'
Comes with original double tom holder, floor tom legs and spurs
In the late 60s, the Ludwig Standard range was launched to compete with budget level Japanese ranges of the time but were made with the same shells as the top range Ludwigs, so are a great chance to get yourself the legendary sounds for less! Another selling point of the Standard range is the unique wrap finishes which weren’t offered for the other series.
I believe this is a 'Standard S-300' set (20", 12" and 14"), with an additional 13" tom added.
Chrome work on the whole is in great shape.
The wrap has cleaned up wonderfully, but there are some scuffs, scratches but it is usual wear for a kit that has been played for 50+ years.
This is a wonderful kit in delightful sizes. One that I would play myself, but alas, I don’t play enough to justify it. These need to be played!
12x8” - Serial number: 18096
Mahogany/poplar/mahogany shell with re-rings
Original internal dampener
Original hoops
Original tension rods although not all are the same design (but you wouldn’t know unless you starred at them all to clean! They work as they should)
Has some snare rash
Two marks by tom mount where the nut has been tightened up
Some scratching above the badge
Two small dents filled in on the reso side
13x9” - Serial number: 20872
Mahogany (outer)/poplar/maple (inner) with re-rings
Original internal dampener
Original hoops
Original tension rods
Has some snare rash
Scratches on the badge
A little bit of seam lift on the wrap join, but is underneath the heads/hoop
Lug mounting screws show some age
The tom mount nut isn’t original but works as it should. I will throw in two ‘1/4” - 20’ wingnuts for the 12” and 13” for ease of set up.
Badge points inwards when set up with the 12”, but would face more forward if just set up as a ‘one-up’ set up
Has a slightly different interior coating which would suggest it was added at a slightly later date, as well as the serial number being a little later than the rest
One dent on reso side filled in
14x14” - Serial number: 18082
Mahogany/poplar/mahogany shell with rerings
Date stamped: Apr 3 1969
Original internal dampener
Original hoops
Original top tension rods - bottom tension rods aren’t original but work as they should
This drum features a bit of the ‘Ludwig hump’, where when they wrapped the shells, they tuck the wrap into the shell causing one side to be a bit flatter. This is completely normal and what gives these shells their legendary sound.
20x14” - Serial number: 18048
Mahogany/poplar/mahogany shell with rerings
Date stamped: Apr 3 1969
Original hoops - These have been polished up, but left with wear and bits touched up by previous owner with permanent marker
Original spurs
Original tension rods and claws
Original tom mount and holder
Original cymbal holder (although the wingnut isn’t original)
Under one spur the wrap had cracked the wrap, but I have repaired this and have now used two larger and stronger washers on the inside to strengthen the shell.
Under one spur, there is a washer that isn’t original but works as it should.
