Date stamped '3703', dating it to March 1937.
Solid 1-ply maple shell with maple reinforcing rings. Chrome hardware and rarely seen and highly collectable engraved top and bottom hoops.
This beautiful drum features original four point strainer, internal dampener, engraved hoops, tension rods and butt end. The extension piece of the lever on the strainer is still present and functions very nicely.
The previous owner believed the drum had been refinished in black lacquer. It’s hard to tell for sure, but I have priced it accordingly as if it has been. This was probably done by Osiecki Music Company as there is a sticker inside and a note saying ‘Repaired 3/28/66’. Still, if it has been refinished, it was done a long while ago and has aged/scratched/chipped around the lugs, so it doesn’t look out of place. It also looks to have had the interior lacquered and the pad on the dampener is not original.
Remo heads are a little tight but go on fine. Also, the modern head collars don’t sit as comfortably as the old calf heads, so seating the head and hoop centrally is key to avoid slippage. Evans or Aquarian hoop collars are thicker and might sit better, but it works nicely regardless.
Previous skins seem to have scratched the finish above where the current skins are.
I find these 1-ply Leedy shells to be a Rolls Royce snare drum. Probably my favourite wooden snare out there and this one is bloody lovely!! A perfect studio or gigging snare.
Freshly cleaned in my workshop in October 2020. Fitted with brand new Remo Vintage Ambassador and Ambassador snare side heads with brand new Puresound Custom Pro Steel wires.
