1932 Ludwig 'Pioneer' 14x5" Nickel over Brass shell
When you think of a Ludwig Pioneer, you might first think of the 60s 6 lug wooden examples, but the Pioneer goes way back to the 1920s. First introduced, I believe in 1928. Firstly an 8 lugger, then a year later, a 6 lugger before settling again on an 8 lugger in 1932. Regardless of the indecision from Ludwig, these are wonderful brass drums.
Fitted with original no-flange hoops with Ludwig Pioneer model stamped on the top hoop, lugs, strainer and butt end.
The drum comes with brand new repro nickel hoop clips which is a nice upgrade as the originals can snap after years of use. There is also brand new chrome tension rods. Sadly no-one makes nickel rods but after a nice clean up of the rest of the hardware and shell, the chrome no longer stands out to be honest.
The bottom part of the strainer is probably from the 60s, as it is chrome plated, but it is an identical part and works the same.
The mounting screws for the strainer and butt end are modern.
The shell and lugs show aging but have cleaned up nicely. Most of the aging is on the hoops and strainer. A previous owner lathered lube all over the strainer which has caused the strainer nickel plating to flake and age much more than usual.
Freshly stripped, cleaned and polished in my workshop in February 2021.
Fitted with brand new Remo Vintage Ambassador and Ambassador snare side heads, with brand new Puresound Custom wires.
