1965 Ludwig 'Club Date' outfit, sized 20x14", 12x8", 14x14" in original White Marine Pearl
The drums have been stripped, polished and cleaned in my workshop and freshly fitted with brand new Remo heads. Vintage A's on tom batters, Coated Ambassador's on tom reso's and kick batter, and a Fiberskyn Ambassador on the kick reso, finished off with a Ludwig and Joe Cox Drums decal.
Serial numbers (from smallest drum to largest): 178694, 178345, 178739, dating them at 1965.
There has been mods to the kit along the way but luckily no extra holes. The changes have been mostly made for a player in mind so this kit would suit a player rather than a collector. I will list the changes below for reference.
- All shells have had bearing edges recut at Newby Drums. This makes them tune up lovely with no troubles.
- Rail mount on the kick has a new L arm and bolt which means the tom holds very well.
- Repro new dampers have been installed on the toms.
- Kick hoops are modern so there is very minimal wear. Inlay is from a different kit but matches well, much better than any new wrap would.
- Toms have new tension rods so work nice and clean.
- The floor tom legs are nickel plated rather than chrome, so have either been added to the kit at a later date or were leftovers in the Ludwig factory. You can barely tell though. There are two floor tom mounts that are nickel also, and these have metal plate backings, but one fitting doesn't - this is at the back of the drum.
- There is a cymbal mount on the kick, however it is missing a thumb screw to tighten in the cymbal arm.
- There are two kick tension rods that are Gretsch. I have fitted them at the bottom and back side of the kick so they are not noticed. If anything they stick out further but this allows for easier pedal attachment to the hoop.
- Interior paint on the toms have been refinished at some point in matt white. Kick interior white paint is still as factory.
- There is a slight orange mark at the top of the kick. This is photographed. It is perhaps nicotine from an old jazz club!
With all this said, the kit is still lovely and has all the charm that a 1965 kit should have, but just with a few added perks, particularly the recut edges.
